EXCLUSIVE MIX #027: Velocity

Pretty excited to have the one Velocity all the way from Tokyo honoring us with Volume #26 of the Exclusive Mix. I had the pleasure to meet Velo in Japan a while back and while I already knew about him, it was pretty crazy to see him Dj live on a proper underground all-dnb show. Without further ado take a listen to his mix below!

Real name:
Takashi Sato aka Velocity. Thanks for having me!

Best thing about mixing/ writing tunes:
Ahhh this is a hard question for me. Loved working on my own productions like  “Ladder” (HE-Digital) , “Night Owl (Human Elements) ”, and everyones supported “Disconnected” (Sheer Velocity). Please check out my Soundcloud page for a sample of what I've been producing lately as well as radio mixes.

Your favorite studio gear:
I really like working on Logic on my Mac, my favorite instrument is Sylenth and if I had to pick an effect,  UAD Studer because of it rich warm sound!

What artist inspires/motivates you:
I got into the Drum&Bass music in the early 2000s to a party here in Tokyo called 06S hosted at the famous Womb Club. When DJ Krust came to DJ, I saw him play and was really feeling it, in fact he inspired me so much, that I started collecting Drum&Bass vinyl the very next day.

Today, I get my friends to inspiring me. Also Makoto, Marky, Lenzman, etc. Specially, Makoto I draw my inspiration from him the most!

Life changing album:
Without a doubt, I would have to say
A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory

Production tip for those getting started:
Keep your ears open to all kinds of music and keep working to refine your sound, don’t stop!

Something people don't know about you:
Under my moniker Velocity I DJ and produce here in Tokyo Japan, where I've been involved in the scene for nearly 15 years. I have music signed to labels like Human Elements, Innerground, Fokuz, Fizzybeats and many more.

How is the DnB scene Tokyo?
Japanese Drum&Bass scene is quite old in a historical way. In the mid 1990's we had a party called "Drum&Bass Sessions" that it's still active in the scene.
Makoto, Lowply, JZT, Aya and myself organized party called "Human Elements" also active in Tokyo.

Besides, there are various Japanese producers going to overseas. Everyones knows Makoto, Ena who is also a great producer and we have some dope DJs too. DJ Dx is one of best DJ in Japan in my opinion, every time he plays, he absolutely kills it. He is the man!

Producing or Djing?
I'm going to say Production! but sometime my day job keeps me so busy that I can get a bit lazy when I get home! haha.

What Djs or Producers from Japan we should look out for?
Perhaps one of the new comers is the young producer called Mountain from Osaka. He just signed with Hospital Records very recently.

Any new tracks you are producing?
Yes I had a recent collab with a great singer/ producer, the legendary MC Fats!! I can’t believe this is happening. My friend Jason Magin (Bassdrive) gave my track to Fats who send an e-mail to me to let me know he loved one of my tracks. I can’t believe it yet!!
His vocals became an amazing complement to the my tune.

I have tested out the collab track on the dance floor lately and I feel a really good reaction by the audience here in Japan. Can’t wait spread our music to the world!

Any plans to come to USA soon?
It's one of my dreams. I went to USA two times already and had nothing but great experiences!

We hope to see Velocity in the states again soon, in the meantime, make sure you catch up with his work below!
