What is the best thing about making/mixing tunes:
Creating something out of nothing. The idea alone is bizarre enough but when you take a step back after working on a tune for hours on end, and hear what it is you’ve made, you can’t help but feel the biggest sense of satisfaction there is. I’ve never experienced a greater sense of pride or wonder as much as I have while making my music. Producing a tune generates a truly magical moment specifically designed to be experienced by yourself and no-one else.
Your favorite studio gear:
Nothing comes even remotely close to how much I love my SubPac. The ability to actually feel your music is a very unique experience. Because you can quite literally feel every single element in a track, it allows you to very precisely and with near surgical precision tweak, transform and dissect any sound into exactly what it is you want in the tune. It adds an entirely new aspect to the production game, a sort of 4th dimension if you will.
What artist inspires/motivates you:
It’s pretty much impossible to name a single artist that I am inspired/motivated by. All the artists I am in touch with and have shared/made music with are talented beyond words and I look up to all of them. I entered this game quite late, everyone else I know has been producing and performing before I even had the idea to start producing music of my own so they are all much more experienced in every way. The one artist I have known of the longest is without a doubt Leon Switch, going back to when he was (and still is) known as the second half of the legendary Kryptic Minds.
Fast forward a few years and not only have we become good friends, but we now make music together, both as solo artists and as a trio alongside Kelly Dean (Exclusive Mix Vol. 004), a true staple in the Los Angeles dubstep scene who’s been in the production game before I even knew what dubstep was. The thought of making music with these two is something I dreamed of when I first started producing, so in a sense, it really is a dream come true!
Life changing album:
There are so many incredible albums out there that I was introduced to at an early age thanks to my parents, albums such as “Mezzanine” and “Blue Lines” by Massive Attack, “The Fat of the Land” by The Prodigy, “Melody A.M.” by Röyksopp and “Play” by Moby are just a fraction of what I was influenced by as a kid. The one that album that I would have to classify as life changing would be “Random Album Title” by deadmau5. It’s an album that came out much later than the ones I mentioned, but it solidified my love for electronic music in a way that no other album has. Every track on there is a masterpiece.
Production tip:
Don’t start something with a set idea in mind. Every single one of my tunes starts off as a blank slate, I make it up as I go along. Naturally I’ll get ideas as the tune progresses but I never have a concept in my head that I want to work around. A lot of people tend to get stuck if they can’t figure out a way to get a certain sound or ‘vibe’ in a tune. This method eliminates any restrictions and the “need” to accomplish a certain something during the creative process, thus allowing you to be completely free of any worries or hindrances. You’re pretty much letting the music do the thinking for you.
Something people don't know about you:
I’m a pretty open book so there aren’t many things people don’t know. I guess a ‘fun fact’ would be that my go-to drink while I make music is Earl Grey tea. Lots of tea. Liters. I have a huge “Size Matters” cup I bought so I can drink as much as I can.
Favorite food joint:
“Surf Burger” in Anglet, a commune in the south of France. It’s a tiny burger place by the beach with the most laid back ‘hang loose’ vibe you can find in Europe. Except for the classic ‘Surf Burger’, the food isn’t even that great (haha) but it’s the atmosphere that does it! I try to go there as often as I can.

It's been a long time coming, volume 28 of the Exclusive Mix series featuring the sounds from Subtle Mind. Chances are that either you are already familiar with them or you've heard some of their tunes being played around. Deep soulful vibes with a strong presence and jazz tones is how I would try to describe their sound. I was fortunate enough to seen them play a few times, but even more fortunate to experience their first live show, at the legendary Rocksteady Club by the JukeBounceWerk crew, with guest live bass by Dubsworth, Tony Sangiacomo on Sax, guest vocals by Ill Chill and more. It was worth the trip to LA on a Tuesday night to experience it, great night all around + tasty ramen.
Anyways, check out their questionnaire + mix below!

Seeing the reaction from a crowd or knowing that a track spurred some sort of emotion in someone.

Real name:
Takashi Sato aka Velocity. Thanks for having me!
Best thing about mixing/ writing tunes:
Ahhh this is a hard question for me. Loved working on my own productions like “Ladder” (HE-Digital) , “Night Owl (Human Elements) ”, and everyones supported “Disconnected” (Sheer Velocity). Please check out my Soundcloud page for a sample of what I've been producing lately as well as radio mixes.
Your favorite studio gear:
I really like working on Logic on my Mac, my favorite instrument is Sylenth and if I had to pick an effect, UAD Studer because of it rich warm sound!
What artist inspires/motivates you:
I got into the Drum&Bass music in the early 2000s to a party here in Tokyo called 06S hosted at the famous Womb Club. When DJ Krust came to DJ, I saw him play and was really feeling it, in fact he inspired me so much, that I started collecting Drum&Bass vinyl the very next day.
Today, I get my friends to inspiring me. Also Makoto, Marky, Lenzman, etc. Specially, Makoto I draw my inspiration from him the most!
Life changing album:
Without a doubt, I would have to say
A Tribe Called Quest - The Low End Theory
Production tip for those getting started:
Keep your ears open to all kinds of music and keep working to refine your sound, don’t stop!
Something people don't know about you:
Under my moniker Velocity I DJ and produce here in Tokyo Japan, where I've been involved in the scene for nearly 15 years. I have music signed to labels like Human Elements, Innerground, Fokuz, Fizzybeats and many more.
How is the DnB scene Tokyo?
Japanese Drum&Bass scene is quite old in a historical way. In the mid 1990's we had a party called "Drum&Bass Sessions" that it's still active in the scene.
Makoto, Lowply, JZT, Aya and myself organized party called "Human Elements" also active in Tokyo.
Besides, there are various Japanese producers going to overseas. Everyones knows Makoto, Ena who is also a great producer and we have some dope DJs too. DJ Dx is one of best DJ in Japan in my opinion, every time he plays, he absolutely kills it. He is the man!
Producing or Djing?
I'm going to say Production! but sometime my day job keeps me so busy that I can get a bit lazy when I get home! haha.
What Djs or Producers from Japan we should look out for?
Perhaps one of the new comers is the young producer called Mountain from Osaka. He just signed with Hospital Records very recently.
Any new tracks you are producing?
Yes I had a recent collab with a great singer/ producer, the legendary MC Fats!! I can’t believe this is happening. My friend Jason Magin (Bassdrive) gave my track to Fats who send an e-mail to me to let me know he loved one of my tracks. I can’t believe it yet!!
His vocals became an amazing complement to the my tune.
I have tested out the collab track on the dance floor lately and I feel a really good reaction by the audience here in Japan. Can’t wait spread our music to the world!
Any plans to come to USA soon?
It's one of my dreams. I went to USA two times already and had nothing but great experiences!

We hope to see Velocity in the states again soon, in the meantime, make sure you catch up with his work below!

Rooted in the underground days of drum & bass and dubstep, Deco wears his influences on his sleeve and blends the sounds of yesteryear with today’s styles & production standards. With over a dozen singles, remixes and EPs credited to his name, Deco has been creating music below the radar for several years earning him a staple spot in the Los Angeles low frequency movement.
His album Reverse Chronology is on frequent rotation here at Dataset, a half time dnb full of deep thought inducing atmospheres lending itself as a useful tool in the creative process. I've been a fan of Deco's work for sometime and last time I got to see him play at Little Tokyo's Rocksteady Tuesdays, my admiration grew even more and had to ask him to record a selection for the mix series.

What is the best thing about making/mixing tunes:
Making music gives me a nice break from the outside world and long stretches of uninterrupted time to be creative. Also, it gives you a lot of opportunities to drink coffee.
Your favorite studio gear:
My phone to count BPMs, practice scales, make chord progressions, capture field recordings, take notes on reference mixes and do about a 100 other music-related activities. A great chair. Truth be told, I sold most of my hardware over the last 2 years and I'm now pretty much all in the box for making music. The last piece of kit I'm hanging onto is an Access Virus TI Snow. I just set it up again recently, even though the TI digital it has a certain analog roundness that makes it sound less harsh than contemporary popular synths like Serum and Massive.
What artist inspires/motivates you:
Anyone who just settles in to their groove, sustains their creative work for a long time, and stays quietly killing it despite what may be going on in the larger world.
Life changing album:
Massive Attack - Mezzanine. I still listen to it about once a month and I constantly find new things buried in the mix. The overall vibe of the record is exactly my thing, the production is top-notch and it's dynamic in a way that's kind of rare now.
Also worth mentioning is Roni Size / Reprazent - New Forms. It blew my feeble little mind the first time I heard it. What can I say, Bristol looms large when it comes to my influences.
Production tip:
Embrace constraints, give yourself ways to create happy accidents, leave some things "good enough", don't take it too seriously.
Something people don't know about you:
I didn't have crunchy peanut butter until I was an adult, it was only the smooth variety in my house growing up. A truly savage upbringing. I will only purchase or consume crunchy peanut butter now that I have control over that part of my life.
Favorite food joint:
Well, I just ate there tonight so I gotta give a shout out to Tsujita Ramen. Best dipping style tsukemen in Los Angeles! Bring a book because the wait can be insane.

What is the best thing about making/mixing tunes:
You can give the same 20 tunes to 20 different dj's. And not one mix will sound the same.
Your favorite studio gear:
The Technics I still own and use to this day. Regardless of playing mostly on cdj’s these days.
What artist inspires/motivates you:
Too many artists from all walks of music to mention! However, I will say that my core crews and fam I fux with help keep me motivated. And shout out to my very talented and artistic friend who helped me find the inspiration I needed to push this Liquid mix out for the Dataset exclusive mix series. Thanks, muse!
Life changing album:
In which era of my life? Haha! I’ve always been a music junkie. I give thanks to my mom and dad for diversifying my ears to all sorts of sounds ever since I was a baby.
DJ tip:
If you’re a beginning DJ, train your ears and learn to transition out of tunes without relying on FX to bail you out. Don’t overdo FX in your sets. And for the love of the gods, both old and new, stop with the corny EDM superstar DJ poses.
Something people don't know about you:
I still get nervous before big shows. As in, I start to dry heave about an hour or so before my set. It’s like that scene out of 8 Mile with Eminem. Minus the vomiting.
We heard you are heading on a little trip soon, can you tell us a bit about it?Absolutely. I'm heading out to Bristol and Amsterdam with my United By Bass brothers, DJ's Garva & Evlo. We head out December 14th-23rd.
Are you guys playing gigs out there?
Yessir! We're warming up the dance at the Intrigue Recordings Christmas Edition show. Really excited to drop some beats for our 2hr b2b, then hear the sounds of SpectraSoul, LSB, Skeptical, Phase & a couple of the Bristol locals. Truly an honor and a pleasure to be a part of this special occasion.
How are you preparing for this and what are your expectations for the trip?
The three of us have been getting together and vibing out on the decks for hrs at a time. Getting a feel of what each dj will bring to the table. Because we have two hrs and am warming up the dance, we're going to bring the same vibes we do at all our SD Union shows. Smooth, sexy, rolling Liquid sounds.
My expectations for this trip is quite simple: Good times. Relaxed vibes. Enjoying the scenery. Eating all of the local food and pints. Taking pictures thru out our journeys since a portion of it will be pretty hazy, haha!
Anything in particular you want to do or see while out there?
The UK is the birthplace of Jungle Drum & Bass. To go to the mecca is something I've always dreamed about ever since I was first introduced to this music. I'm going to immerse myself fully with the experience, and appreciate every single moment with my brothers, friends, and new friends I make. I'm a, "Go with the flow," kind of guy. So I have no expectations but to enjoy this life I live.
Favorite food joint:
First off, I’d like to say I love food. I have a couple food spots for just about every cuisine out there. I live in San Diego, after all. So, current favorite food joint? It’s a tie between Santouka & Nishiki for my ramen fix.
Shout out to:
My United By Bass crew, my Special Technique brothers, my MIA crew, all the promoters, MC’s, producers and DJ’s I’ve crossed paths with thru the years (regardless if we like each other or not, there’s a purpose why we interacted), those whom I call my close friends and fam. I love you all.

The best thing about making tunes is that you will never know what it will be in the end, during the whole process we are filled with constant enjoyment in discovering new vibes. Mixing tunes that’s another story.. the best thing is when the next drop is coming and u know what is coming . . .

Production tip:
Having your sounds organized helps a lot. You want to be able to work fast if you have an idea. It’s the worst when you don’t find the right sounds, because then you can easily loose the feeling of the track. We think the first 45-minutes of a work session is the most essential part in the process of writing music. So, in order to catch the moment, have your sounds in order. Don’t overwork it; rather simplify than complicate things.

Long overdue, volume 23 of the Exclusive Mix is here and this time we increase the tempo to match the sounds of Chorux. A San Diego based producer / dj that I was fortunate to see DJ at a few events here and there, before I just had to extend an invite his way to do a mix after hearing a couple of really good tunes I’ve never heard before being dropped during his sets.
The tunes in question were written by him and just got released on none other than Warm Communications as Chorux‘s debut EP entitled Polaris which is getting lots of support from big names in the scene.

What is the best thing about making/mixing tunes:
The best thing about making tunes is when someone is moved by your music. I got into making music because of songs that really moved me, and the release on Warm Communications has given me the opportunity to have my tunes heard by people all over the world, even artists I’m a fan of. Some of them are now playing them out in their DJ sets, which is amazing. It’s always been mostly just to have fun, but when others are really feeling something you made, that’s the best part.
In regards to your Polaris EP release, I know you have been getting lots of support by some big names like Blu Mar Ten, Quadrant & Subtone to name a few, did this come by surprise? How does this impact you as an artist and your motivation to continue to produce more material?
Oh yea, it came as a huge surprise! Them as well as EastColors, Stealth, Mutated Forms, even Jenna G on her radio show on Reform Radio in Manchester, and a lot of big names who have given great feedback. To hear that and to have my tunes being played out by artists I look up to is amazing and totally surreal. It’s definitely something I could get used to, and certainly motivates me and encourages me to keep going.
What’s next for you on both the production / dj fronts?
Not a lot of gigs at the moment, but I should have some stuff lined up pretty soon. I’m working on some new music which I’m really excited about. I have started the initial plans for a second release on Warm Communications, which will come out on vinyl and hopefully by the end of the year if all goes as planned. So keep it locked for that.
I may have read somewhere that you also play in a non-electronic music project, is this correct? If so, can you tell me a bit more about this other project? What are elements of playing in a live band that you find useful when djing and vice versa?
Yea, I play in a sort of punk surf rock band with some buddies of mine called Mooncrier on the side. I play synths and keys in it, so it is a little bit electronic and not too far off from dnb in that regard. Obviously all the synthesis and sound design stuff I’ve learned from making dnb helps in writing stuff for the band, but I think most of all, it’s just really refreshing to jam and play music with others in a live format. In dnb I produce solo and DJ to perform. I used to play in bands in high school before I got into electronic music, and when I got into production, it was refreshing to not have to deal with other band members. Just make beats and be in charge of everything. I guess it does get lonely sometimes though. Haha.
Your favorite studio gear:
Virus TI2, NI Komplete, Serum, UA Plugins, Camelphat, Cableguys and Addictive Drums. I use lots of different stuff to try to keep things fresh, but these are always my ‘go-tos’.
What artist inspires/motivates you:
I’m always trying to hear new music as often as possible, and I’m inspired by tons of artists from all different styles.
As far as dnb, I definitely have to give it up for Break. He’s been putting out tunes with his own signature sound that, in my opinion, have always been on a whole other level, for as long as I’ve been listening to drum n bass and he’s STILL leading the pack. Without question, the most influential for me. DLR has always been at the top of the list as well since Octane & DLR, and his new album is ridiculously good. And Spectrasoul are definitely some of my all-time favorite producers. Their complete sound over the span of their catalog has been like nothing else, and I can’t wait for their new album.
Outside of dnb, I’m a big fan of anything from Burial, Four Tet, Bob Moses, Bonobo, Tycho, Of Monsters And Men, Matrimony. I’m really loving Sufjan Stevens and Death Cab For Cutie’s new albums. I love Interpol and Imogen Heap’s newest albums (though not so new now). I love everything I’ve heard from Jamie XX’s new forthcoming album. And a rather brand new band that I’ve been loving, The Erised, is a group that I can’t recommend enough if you haven’t checked them out yet. So good!
I like that your musical influences are pretty broad overall, this makes me wonder, what made you dive into dnb? What do you get from it that perhaps you don’t get from other genres?
It’s just simply the most intense and stimulating music I’ve ever heard to this day, and it only gets better the deeper you dig. I got into it through going to raves and parties in LA and SD, and like many people I found that the music in most of the rooms were okay, really nothing special, but the dnb room and the vibe I caught early on was totally different and just really made a huge impact on me. Having said that, I do think it’s important to keep your tastes varied when it comes to music. Listening to just dnb or even just electronic music is not for me. I get really bored of only listening to one thing. There’s so much great music out there and I think that the more broad a range of styles you can learn to appreciate, the better each one of them sounds when you hear them. We all know what happens when something gets overplayed, right?
Life changing album:
Sigur Ros – ( )
Production tip:
Don’t get into the habit of becoming too wrapped up with certain tricks or techniques and thinking that you should always be using them. This is true for pretty much everything, and the best examples are the common tools like EQ and compression. Obviously there are a few hard and fast rules here and there, but you should always remember to EQ, compress, process, etc WITH purpose.
Something people don’t know about you:
I have a serious fear of heights.
Favorite food joint:
Man, that’s a tough one. There are literally too many good places to eat in San Diego, it’s always so hard to choose. Tacos La Mezcla is a gourmet street taco truck that comes to a bar right outside my place almost every weekend, and I seriously eat there two days in a row if they’re out there. Amazing.

Volume 22 of the Exclusive Mix for Dataset by LA based DJ & Producer, Pavarotti. A seasoned DJ, handpicked by the legendary Smog crew to preserve the original dubstep sound, push it forward, and maintain dubplate culture.
We’ve asked him a while back to share a mix for us, but due to school, a busy schedule of shows and finishing some new tunes, it took a bit longer than expected but after hearing it, we can see it was more than worth it. Pavarotti‘s drive to deliver a strong mix can be felt on the speakers with every track selection.

Production tip:
Fix everything in the mix, never the master.
You have been working on a few new tunes for sometime and wanted to get them ready before jumping on this mix. Can you tell me a bit about the tracks?
I have been in the process of wrapping up Lion Dub and Tiger Claw for quite some time. Tiger Claw was nearly done then I reached out to III Chill to jump on it, I really love his addition to the song. Lion Dub is one of my favorite tracks, yet I don’t know if I will ever be happy with the mix down.
Can you tell me a bit of your production process?
My production process always starts with creating the atmosphere and getting the vibe going. Once I have this formulated everything usually flows freely and I am then able to get all of my ideas out.

It’s been a while since our last feature and we are stoked to welcome Crix Saiz, representing the Alburquerque, NM area. I met Chris at one of the Freaky Tiki Bass nights by the Rude Behavior crew, after a visit to the Elk Beats HQ. I’ve heard great things about this crew and was great to experience the great vibes, a passionate community the knows how to throw it down. During the night I remember asking Donnie EshOne if he knew the tune being played and he kept saying it was all original from Cris himself (or some collaboration between both of of them as well). But enough chit chat, let’s get down to the tunes, on this 21st installment of the Exclusive Mix series.

What is the best thing about making/mixing tunes:
The best thing for me has always been the feeling you get when you start to control a crowd and make them move to your sound. Then, to top that off, once you start throwing your own tunes into the mix its game over!
Your favorite studio gear:
Lovin’ my Mackie studio monitors, I’d be lost without them.
Sound game strong.
What artist inspires/motivates you:
If I had to go back way back, I would say Dillinja was always one of my biggest inspirations even still to this day. The sounds of Matty G and J:Kenzo have also been huge inspirations as far as my 140 production goes.
Life changing album:
Generation Dub – The Deliverance EP blew my mind when I was younger and definitely changed my life in some way.
Production tip:
Always try and switch the style up even if it be the BPM of a track or a sound you’re not familiar with.
Something people don’t know about you:
I am one of the original founding members of the ‘Burque Shore House’
Favorite food joint:
I am a huge fan of sopapillas, and there is a local joint called El Modelo that makes the meanest stuffed sopapilla you could ever ask for!

Best thing about mixing/ writing tunes:
When I’m in the studio I can easily leave my thoughts and problems outside, writing music has a beneficial effect on my mind, like an introspective journey about creating and searching for the right sound, editing till it reaches its perfect form, and merge all the elements to create something new from scratch, which has grown hand in hand with you. This is why I love making tunes, no matter how much time I spend on a track.
I like to have something concrete of the work I’ve done, something that people can listen to.
Your favorite studio gear:
I love my Virus TI2: bought it almost two years ago, and from that day I’ve been using it for everything. It’s fun to turn knobs and push buttons instead of using a mouse. It adds to the creative process, and the possibilities are endless!
Along side the Virus, I also love my Ableton Push controller: easy to use, and I can do everything on it without using the keyboard or mouse, better and faster.
What artist inspires/motivates you:
There are too many artists that inspire me, but if I have to pick a few, I’d say Mesck, Kryptic Minds, Biome, Warsa, D-Operation Drop, Distance, Demon, Kaiju, Perverse, Truth.. Everyone has something unique that inspired me in one way or another.
Also everyone who supports me and gives me the motivation to keep doing what I love to do.
Life changing album:
Again, It’s hard to name only one album that changed my life, cause a lot of them gave me something. Coming from a hip hop background I can say “The Platform by Dilated Peoples” was one of them. When I first heard it, I fell in love with Alchemist & Babu’s beats and from that day I decided to start producing.
Production tip for those getting started:
Start learning your tools, from your DAW of choice to your plug-ins. Less is better, so try to focus on a small range of equipment (software or hardware) and get to know them as much as you can. Doing regular sound design sessions, will help define your own sound, experiment on new techniques, Spend lots of time improving your mixing, it’s the most important part of production. Also, don’t get to hand up on having specific hardware or plugins, they won’t do miracles, it’s all about how you use what you have, that’s it.
Something people don’t know about you:
I love cook and drink coffee, and I don’t like butterflies.

Very excited about volume 18th of our Exclusive Mix Series, this time featuring a duo from Japan.
DJ Largemouth and MC D2 came together to form Kaizan Records in their native Kanagawa, the far eastern heartland of Japan where the Kanto mountains meet the Pacific. Together, they have been producing and broadcasting their sound to the fast moving scene by releasing tunes through a variety of mediums while continuing to perform regularly at crucial gigs on the Tokyo circuit.
Their mix offers a unique perspective to the sounds circulating in the Japanese underground at the moment, so crank the volume up, and enjoy Large Mouth & MC D2 mix for Dataset Clothing.

What is the best thing about making/mixing tunes:
Well the best thing to me is to get in the Zone and then forget about everything around me, spending hours in that kind of deep meditation making tunes is what really feels good to me. I’ve never produced tunes like a robot. I really have to get goose bumps, otherwise I really don’t make tunes, I’d rather get out and spend time in the nature for example or read a book, but when the goose bumps are here, no one can get me out of this vibe and the tune can be done within few hours .
Whats also amazing is that I test all my tunes in clubs and festivals many times and thats the best inspiration ever as well, ’cause I get really excited knowing I’m gonna drop the tune next weekend while in the studio .
Your favorite studio gear:
Hummm… I would say my ears haha. Nah, seriously I got a Valve EQ which I really like but its all about your ears and knowledge about music really, people sometimes are talking much shit about what gear you need to have to achieve a certain sound and thats not true at all … if you were to see the studios of some top names in the scene, you would be really surprised trust me .
What artist inspires/motivates you:
There’s a few artist that motivates me , of course close friends like Swindle, Silkie, Quest, Chefal and others … but the start of my love with bass music is Dillinja and Lemon D, they had that sound that completely changed the way I view music …
Their beats are often really hard but its always Soulful and they just have their sound … sound signature is really something that capture my attention when I listen to certain producers.
Life changing album:
Photek – Modus Operandi
Production tip:
Be open minded and find your own sound , its not about creating the same hard bass as others but make things sound your way .
Something people don’t know about you:
I’m French, I don’t watch TV and I eat snails from time to time .
Favorite food joint:
My Lady’s Soto Soup (indonesian dish), I’m a sucker for soup , I’m really a soup lover.

Real name:
M. Zachary Mellion, the “M” stands for Michael which is actually my first name, fun fact.
What is the best thing about making/mixing tunes:
Maybe the fact the fact that it keeps me sane (relatively speaking of course). In all seriousness though there is just something about creating a piece of music, or visual art on your own that is gratifying on a very personal, esoteric level. That time spent in the studio creating, and taking something from inception to completion all on my own is a therapeutic process. Each tune started is kind of like a new soundscape ready to be explored for the first time. Maybe I have a rough idea where it’s going to lead, but there’s no absolute end result in sight. I know it probably sounds a bit cheesy but there’s just something incredibly fulfilling about knowing that once I’m long gone, all of the music and artwork I’ve created will still remain in some form or another.
Your favorite studio gear:
From a creative standpoint I would have to say my Virus Indigo 2. It’s old school, dusty, the screen is broken, and it doesn’t have the same VST connectivity as the newer TI models; but there’s just something about all the knobs and keys that really does it for me. I guess it’s just a more physical approach to sound design, actually working with your hands to some degree rather than being 100% in the box.
If we’re talking more technical studio gear, I would have to say my Adams A8x studio monitors. Ever since taking the plunge and picking up a pair, my production / mixdown game has progressed tenfold. Having a proper monitoring setup is absolutely essential.
What artist inspires/motivates you:
Everyone I’ve worked with in the past few years has inspired me in some way. Deco, Warsa, Deafblind, Kial, Kelly Dean, Dubtek, EshOne, all my stateside crew, and of course my Chestplate fam. In fact it wasn’t until I heard Distance’s first full length LP on Planet Mu in 2007 that I was completely sold on dubstep. Coming from a Drum & Bass background I’ve always looked for a certain level of depth and energy in dance music that I wasn’t hearing in other productions at the time. Tunes like Night Vision, My Demons, and Traffic really stood out and got me motivated to set my sequencer to 140, so to be releasing music on Chestplate now feels like things truly have come full circle. I’m also equally inspired by visual art and film as well.
Life changing album:
Growing up I was diving head first into a new style of music every couple months so that makes this a really difficult question. There are quite a few albums from different era’s that have played different roles in who I am today as an artist. If I had to pick one on the spot I guess I would have to say it was Anticon: Music for the Advancement of Hip Hop. I bought it at a record shop in Philly having absolutely no idea what it was. Being an extremely visual person, I think there was something about the cover art that spoke to me. This was around the same time I got my MPC 2000XL and was sampling loads of old vinyl, so there was this transformation from listener to producer that I was going through which made it extra influential. The end of the 90’s and beginning of the new millennium was kind of a weird time for hip hop. Everything was quickly becoming over-polished, the beginning of the “bling” era in a sense. So from a bedroom producer’s perspective it was refreshing to see a very DIY take on production and avant-garde lyricism.
Production tip:
Get weird in the studio, don’t be afraid to experiment. It’s always good to set certain goals when you sit down to write a piece of music no matter what point you’re at in the process, but you also have to make sure you give yourself a few sessions here and there with absolutely zero structure. In fact get away from the computer, break out the field recorder and go nuts. I’ve compiled a pretty massive library of original percussive and atmospheric elements simply by recording the things around me.
Something people don’t know about you:
The origin of my alias I suppose, I get asked that a lot. I was heavy into graffiti art in my teenage years and that was just the name I had chosen. Maybe it’s short for mescaline… maybe it isn’t, haha.
Favorite food joint:
Aside from my own kitchen I would have to say Father’s Office in Venice, hands down. Best burger I’ve ever had in my life, ridiculous amount of beer on draft. Can’t go wrong.

Favorite part about mixing / making music:
The feel of connecting with the crowd through music. Every track selected and cued on a mix expresses one’s view of the world.
Favorite studio equipment:
That would be my new AIAIAI TMA-1 Headphones, their sound is clear and has a very cool design. I also like my ALLEN&HEATH XONE:DB4 because it’s versatility for mixing.
Name a music album that changed your life and why:
DJ CRAZE / LIVE IN PUERTO RICO : HIPHOP DRUM N BASS TURNTABLISM, Because this was my introduction to the Drum’n’bass sound.
Production/ mixing advise for beginners:
Keep the faith.
Tell us something people don’t know about you:
I spin Dnb strictly on vinyl on a triple deck setup. I also love drawing/ painting, I used to do it live in clubs a long time ago. I also find a strange beauty in ruins/ decay.
Strictly Vinyl huh?:
Yes, it has the best sound, weight and warmth you know?
Your Favorite restaurant?:
Uguisu ( in Tokyo, Setagaya ), great dishes and wine selection.
How big is the scene in Japan right now? The bass scene in Japan is not that big, but it’s been growing in the past few years. Getting stronger every day.
If we were to visit your city, and wanted to learn more about the bass scene there, which clubs would you recommend to someone visiting Japan and why?
Go to Daikanyama UNIT, it has the best soundsystem!
Do you have any new tracks you are producing? Maybe plans to release something soon?
I just finished a track with Kan Takahiko called Blackout. Maybe getting released this summer!

Humbled to introduce this ‘mini-mix’ from Boston based producer/ DJ, AxH who on top of pushing bass sound for over a decade, just had his debut on the legendary Tempa (TEMPA086), known for not only their quality sound selection but for their impeccable and consistent graphic branding, the release includes the tracks ‘Destroy’, ‘Everdine’ & ‘Giant Footprints’ available now on vinyl/ digital formats. Known for his all-original sets, AxH decided to treat us with a rare blend he describes as ‘outer space mix’, exploring the dub / mellow sounds of the bass spectrum. What is the best thing about making/mixing tunes:
For making tunes – creative freedom. Building from nothing, and having tangible proof of its existence. I love releasing on vinyl. It’s the physical version of your work, and there it is in your hands.
Your favorite studio gear:
I use hardware and software, and I love my Korg R3, Allen & Heath ZED24 mixing console, Neumann U87 microphone, and all my rack effects.
What artist inspires/motivates you:

Life changing album:
Igorrr – Hallelujah, Notorious B.I.G. – Ready To Die
Production tip:
Attention to detail! Focus on your frequencies. Read articles, watch tutorials. Never stop learning.

What is the best thing about making/mixing tunes:
It keeps me off the streets…
My music creations directly reflect my passion, so that where I see music as a form of communication, I’m speaking my own words, so peoples’ reaction to my music is gratifying and satisfying… and sometimes disturbing…
Also, music is one of my deepest meditations: when I’m in studio; doing radio; playing sax or flute; playing to a club dance floor, nothing else is in my head but the music, which is a powerful state of mind to achieve!
Your favorite studio gear:
My new Selmer sax, my iMac; my Dyne Audio monitors, and my Technics 1200’s!

Life changing album:
Mavado – “Gangster For Life – The Symphony of David Brooks”
Production tip:
Remember to put some emotion in your music – there needs to be a melody, whether it’s in the dark hard B-line or a sweet vocal – something that will grab people’s attention – they’ll respond to the emotion in a tune, and that’s more than likely to be the part that earns you publishing points, because you can’t copyright a groove!

I’m Irish and I speak 5 languages

We reached Volume 10 of the Exclusive Mix Series and who better to host it than the legendary Sinistarr, whos distinct sound reflects the musical landscape of his hometown Detroit, Michigan, combining the sounds of Detroit Techno, House and Detroit Electro into his own blend of Drum and Bass. This time surprising us with “an all beatdown mix’ as he describes it, with an intergalactic blend of futuristic sounds ready to serve as the backdrop of a light-cycle chase on a sci-fi movie.

Super stoked to announce volume 09 of the Dataset Exclusive Mix series, featuring none other than Abjo.
A San Diego based producer that caught my eye (and ears) for the first time, during an unexpected set with hip-hop legend Mr. Brady from Deep Rooted. I remember being completed blown away by his production and approaching him after their amazing set to express my admiration. After that, we crossed paths at the producer’s meet-up at Kava Lounge where Abjo will always play some of his productions. Always fresh, always musical, mellow atmospheres with warm tones and a dash of soul is how I can describe his sound.

December is almost here, and we already have the the 7th installment of the Exclusive Mix Series. This time we are proud to present Sleeve↓, from the Liquid Geometry crew, dedicated to bring some great artists to San Diego, and at the same time putting out quality releases as a record label. I think I got to meet Sleeve↓ after a show at Kava Lounge a while back, and I was impressed not only with his sound but with the fact that there was no laptop on sight during his set, he was playing straight out of an SP-404 and If I remember correctly a Kaoss Pad, right then and there I became a fan and asked Sleeve↓ to be a part of theFuture Sounds of San Diego compilation that we released with Big Up Magazine. So take a look at the interview below and stream, share or download his mix full of unreleased material and original productions by them man himself.

Who are you:
A picky music lover who can never learn enough! I enjoy making and playing music for people, and especially enjoy the transfer of energy during a performance. I also manage a record label, Elk Beats, and above all we try to put out some cool tunes for big sound systems.
Your big music dream:
As a fan, I’d love to see the band Down in a seedy Louisiana bar with a glass of whiskey. As a DJ, I just want to keep traveling. As a producer, I’d love to keep expanding my palette and be able to create any kind of sound with ease.
Your favorite studio gear:
Right now, I’m on this cassette tape thing. I have a Tascam Porta One 4 track that sounds amazing. I’m recording elements of tracks, or even whole tracks in some cases, to tape and then bringing them back into the box. Even just running a signal pretty hot through the 4 track without recording it sounds fantastic. Nothing beats real distortion.
What artist in your scene inspires/motivates you:
What artist in your scene inspires/motivates you:
I’m always inspired by my friends in New Mexico. They are truly all about fun. I’d list names, but they know who they are, and there are a lot of them too! Some of the most talented artists and musicians I know come from Albuquerque, it’s a really cool scene.
Life changing album:
I think Back for the Future by Dom & Roland was the album that made me want to take music production seriously. I wanted to make a specific sound and play it, and I spent a lot of time trying to learn how to make darker music with a heavy dance groove.
Production tip:
Make weird stuff. I’m always surprised when people don’t respond to a track I think they will like, and go nuts for the weird ones. To someone who’s always analyzing dance music culture, it may seem stupid at times, but the people in it are smart, and they want cool shit to listen to.
Something people don’t know about you:
I spend half of my time on a ranch in northern New Mexico. We raise cattle and grow hay to feed them. Thanks to my mom (who is also the reason I’m so into music in the first place), I’ve become obsessed with fly fishing for trout over the past year. I’m even tying my own patterns now. Hiking the rivers in northern New Mexico is an amazing experience.
Favorite food joint:
Lido’s Italian Restaurant in Spring Valley… For so many reasons.

Eddie Turbo - Exclusive Mix | #005 by Dataset on Mixcloud
Who are you:
An editor, selector and philanthropist of good music, Editor Beau = Eddie Turbo.
Your big music dream:
Simply sharing music with new & old friends, and collaborating with like-minded artists in the San Diego music scene. And to see Schlachthofbronx perform live on a banging sound system.
Your favorite studio gear:
The custom dub box ("The Interceptor") constructed by Jon Erickson who runs Jayne's Gastro Pub with his wife Jayne and plays bass in the soul band The Amandas. Those bleeps and blips in the mix come directly from The Interceptor.
What artist in your scene inspires/motivates you:
Inspired mostly by San Diegans - Habitat Sound, Tribe of Kings Soundsystem, guitarist Jah Oil, The Real Matt Hughes, EshOne, Illuminauts, Low Voltz & Gears.
Life changing album:
Martin Campbell's Hi-Tech Roots Dynamics "West Kingston Dub" (big up to Dunning Butler for introducing me to this one)
Production tip:
Capturing a live mix or drum riddim or lick/hook rather than spending hours and hours laboring over a specific sequence usually feels better and usually sounds better. Happy accidents are the truest form of your artistic expression and will relate to the average listener much more than a "perfect" sound and sequence. This theory all goes to shit though if you can't actually beatmatch or play a drum beat or guitar/keyboard hook, so practice your musicianship and your talent will eventually shine through in the production. Garbage in, garbage out.
Something people don't know about you:
Before this whole deejay /SouCal thing happened back in 1999, I was a collegiate swimmer at the University of New Hampshire and played tenor sax in the high school jazz band.
Favorite food joint:
Craft & Commerce and of course Jayne's Gastro Pub

Today Dataset Clothing brings you an Exclusive Mix by San Diego based, Puppy Kicker an essential component of the Brokenbeat family and one of the most technical producers I've met, Justin has strength in both, production and mixing, very rarely he will play out his own tunes, which are incredibly musical, for a genre that sometimes can get a bit mechanical sounding. His recent EP "Colors and Memories" out on Rogue Dubs is a personal favorite and testament of his amazing production skills.
