DÂM-FUNK AT THE CASBAH
November 2, 2011
FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4TH 2011 @ CASBAH
Dãm Funk & MASTER BLAZTER
Known as Los Angeles’ “Ambassador of Boogie Funk,” Dam-Funk represents the citizens of the Funkmosphere. Headquartered in the Leimert Park section of L.A., Dãm (pronounced: ‘Dame’ as in Damon) spent the last few years cultivating a musical renaissance rooted in the early-’80s styles known as Boogie, Modern Soul and Electro-Funk.
The next phase of the Ambassador’s mission is his debut album Toeachizown: continuing the classic West Coast tradition into today’s scene with Dãm’s own original “Modern-Funk” compositions. By plugging in his arsenal of vintage synths and drum machines, Dãm channels the galactic harmonies of his inspiration into his own brand of new boogie.
Also performing:
Who’s live performances are akin to watching a sorcerer conjure spirits from the deep. He pulls tones like artifacts from an astral trail that ebbs and flows with fresh discoveries. Along the way Matthewdavid collects exotic sound figures: spiraling amethyst cones and wild flowering buds. He treats each found sound like a bright fiber to be weaved into new waveforms. Outmind pulsates with this sense of constant discovery. It is a mosaic sparkling with mystic, radiant matter.
Featured on our upcoming compilation Future Sounds of San Diego , Illuminauts is in our opinion one of the music projects to watch, their original sounds are performed live, which makes for an incredible experience to enjoy right then an there, so make sure you get there early if you have never seen these guys before. The video above is a fragment of their live act.
Recently highlighted on our featured mix section , Turbo represents half of the ¡GEMATRIA! Records. and also serves as resident selector at San Diego’s longest running dub club weekly, the 8 years strong Dub Dynamite (Monday nights at The Office Bar) alongside Tribe of Kings
‘ Rashi.

EVENT: ELK LODGE (FEAT SNF)
July 7, 2011
On friday July 15th, Elk Beats will be launching their first and long awaited Elk’s Lodge featuring SNF (San Francisco), operator of one of the best radio shows we have tuned into – Stepping Into Tomorrow, and a graduate student at UCSF studying Biophysics.
SNF is a master of his craft, programming intricate blends and consciously directing his mixes into real time experiences – it will not be hard to lose your ego and move to this man’s beats. He will be playing an exclusive deejay set, both on vinyl, and unreleased digital dubs from some of the most respected international labels including Hyperdub and Hotflush.
Bringing the local flavors to the table will be Puppy Kicker and Ubiquitous. They got wind of SNF’s more house/uk funky stylings, and will be playing sexy beats to warm up the club for the main selector. Rumor has it that Ubiquitous will be rocking a funky tech house set
There is no word from Elk Beats founders, EshOne & Misk, as to whether we can expect some sounds from them, but judging by the recent activity from these two, one would expect Elk to take the controls at some point in the night and let forth the beat stampede.

WED, APRIL 13 | SF: BREAKAGE & GOTH-TRAD
March 31, 2011

BIG UP MAGAZINE, DUBSPOT ONLINE, and SCION A/V PRESENT: “When I Was A Youth” issue release featuring:
BREAKAGE [Digital Soundboy, UK]
To quote Mr. Roots Manuva… “Breakage is a man with an ear for deep, deep, sub-sonic frequencies. He goes in low. I thinking he’s talking to sea-life. He’s talking to the squid”.
Moving effortlessly through styles from drum and bass to dubstep, Breakage has proved himself to be one of the most versatile operators in either scene to date. His recent widely acclaimed “Foundation” album featuring David Rodigan, Newham Generals, Roots Manuva and even Burial, has left us all ‘speechless’, but Breakage can’t stop and his new album is already mastering his takeover plan with an upcoming album. Can we just say “HARD”?
Read the interview with Breakage in the new “When I Was A Youth” issue of Big Up.
About two years ago, this Japan’s prodigy made his first American appearance at our second issue release show, and spread his own take on the Deep Medi sound far and deep. We’re utterly excited to have him return to San Francisco before taking on his first Coachella set.
Read interview with Goth-Trad in the third issue of Big Up.
BASSWEIGHT DOCUMENTARY SCREENING
Documentary reviewed in UK’s Guardian and named “one of the best documentaries made about the full spectrum of dubstep” by kode9 is a feature length film that offers an unparalleled insight into the subterranean world of Dubstep. Skream, Benga, Kode9, Mary Anne Hobbs, DMZ and many more featured in the film and “far from merely being more evidence of our accelerated culture, Bassweight could mark an important shift in how breaking – music scenes are presented. It’s time to give music fans a chance to look forward, not back, at the scenes they love.” Movie screening starts at 9 PM.
ESHONE [Dead/Technology, San Diego]
San Diego’s dub plate specialist, EshOne is one of the dinosaurs still cutting dubs, and still in denial about whomp, wonk, bro, and anything purple (almost anything). He definitely ain’t half-stepping and spreading the movement via his blog sdddubstep.com and San Diego’s club night Dead//Technology.
DIALS [Soundpieces, San Francisco]
You have definitely seen Dials run around with his head cut off booking the most exciting music shows in San Francisco, via Change The Beat and 103 Harriet, including Low End Theory SF. Now it’s time for him to relax and play a chill solo dj set.
Hyph Mngo (dj dials remix) by dj_dials
Hosted by AUDIO ANGEL [BADNB, San Francisco]
All this extravaganza will be accompanied by the divine voice of Audio Angel. Only good vibes from this lady, so get there early to get the full experience.
